02 — For other artists

Records I've made for other bands

Above, Below is my band. These are not. Five artists, fourteen releases, across metalcore, alt-rock, punk and country. As an Australian metalcore producer most of the work is heavy, but the process travels.

Loud, fast and deliberately rough around the edges. Not every record wants to be polished.

Australian country

Country, not metal, and I played on most of it. The job is the same: work out what the song is doing and get out of its way.

03 — Who I work with

Heavy, broadly interpreted

PROGRESSIVE METAL·METALCORE·POST-HARDCORE·HARDCORE·ALTERNATIVE·ATMOSPHERIC HEAVY·EXPERIMENTAL HEAVY·AND WHATEVER YOU'D CALL THE COUNTRY RECORD

If the guitars are heavy but the record needs space, dynamics and ideas, we'll probably get along.

What others said

Outside voices

"Their use of space and more subdued moments is refreshing and captivating."

Boolin Tunes · 9/10 · I Guess It Was Nowhere

"The mixing is superb."

Metal Academy · I Guess It Was Nowhere

"A level of craftsmanship with all aspects of their sound."

04 — What I do

01

Production

Arrangement, structure and performance. Most of the work happens before anything is recorded.

02

Engineering

Drums want a proper room, so those happen in person. Guitars, bass, vocals and everything after can be tracked wherever you are.

03

Mixing

Balance, space and dynamics. Loud is easy. Records that hold up on the fortieth listen are the hard part.

04

Mastering

When I've mixed it too, mastering becomes the last expression of decisions made much earlier. When you'd rather have fresh ears, that's a good call and I'll work with them.

  • Jacob did this
  • Shared with another producer
  • Someone else did this

I learned this chain alongside two very good engineers, then took it over. The last column is why the record sounds like one idea instead of four.

The person you'd be working with

This is the room. That's me in it.

Nine years, most of them in here. If we make a record together, this is where a lot of it happens.

Send me three reference tracks and the roughest demo you have. I'll tell you what I think the record wants to be.

No charge. No obligation. I'll have listened properly.
